Overview

Pending funding from NSF. This Research Experiences for Undergraduates (REU) Site Award for Chemistry Molecular Innovation and Exploration (CheMIE) to Texas State University, located in San Marcos, TX, supports the training of 10 students for 10 weeks during each of the summers of 2026-2028. In this program, funded by the Division of Chemistry, participants pursue collaborative research projects in chemistry, biochemistry, and materials science. Participants also take an integrated course of professional development and career exploration, which incorporates their research lab experiences with field trips and workshops to explore chemistry careers in the academic, government, and private sectors. Participants develop a broad understanding of how innovation forms an interface between basic research and applied development. Through independent research projects and the integrated professional development/career exploration series, this site broadens participation in STEM by promoting awareness of and preparation for the wide variety of career opportunities in the molecular sciences. The participants will carry out individual, interdisciplinary projects in faculty research groups that span all fields of chemistry. These projects include the characterization of electronically active polymers and nanoparticles, the synthesis of natural product derivatives with potential pro-apoptotic activity, and analysis of mutant proteins to build structure-function relationships. The professional development series includes seminars on scientific communication, careers in chemistry, and transferrable skills. To increase participation in the chemistry workforce, this site recruits students from regional institutions that have limited access to chemical research programs in Texas and adjacent states.

Research topics

Innovation, collaboration, industry, chemistry, biochemistry, analytical chemistry, physical chemistry, inorganic chemistry, organic chemistry, bioinorganic chemistry, biochemistry, medicinal chemistry, material science

Eligibility

This competitive program is open to undergraduates majoring in Chemistry, Biochemistry, Materials Science, or related fields, who have completed at least one year of college, including two semesters of college chemistry with laboratory experience (completion of Organic Chemistry 2 preferred). We welcome applications from students at 4-year universities and community colleges, and encourage individuals from traditionally underrepresented groups, including minorities, women, and veterans, to apply. Due to funding restrictions, we can only accept US citizens and permanent residents.
