Overview

In summer 2026, the Computer Science and Engineering (CSE) department at the University of Notre Dame (ND) will be offering a computer science-focused Research Experience for Teachers (RET) site. Teachers will work with ND personnel on a research project that focuses on the advances, capabilities, and challenges associated with machine learning (ML) / artificial intelligence (AI) algorithms – that are currently driving efforts at companies such as Google, Apple, and Instagram, federal agencies such as the FBI, as well as computer hardware manufacturers such as IBM, Intel, and Samsung. Teachers will translate ideas and lessons from their summer experiences to develop new curriculum to introduce and prepare future generations of students to understand and develop ML/AI software and systems. (Efforts will be assisted by CSE teaching faculty, personnel from ND’s Center for STEM Education, and local elementary, middle, and high school teachers who have prior experience with RET programs, and can help to provide additional guidance about both meaningful and practical research to classroom translations.) We aim to share developed materials via multiple channels (at the local, state, and national levels), and will simultaneously work to address computer science standards from the Indiana Department of Education.

Research topics

Computer Science, Artificial Intelligence, Machine Learning, Elementary School, Middle School, neural networks, deep learning, nanotechnology

Eligibility

For this iteration of the RET, we are primarily targeting in-service and pre-service teachers in grades 3 through 8 – although several additional slots may be available for several teachers in any grade (K-12).
