Overview

PLEASE NOTE: All application materials for our priority deadline must be submitted by 11:59 pm on February 1ˢᵗ, 2026. Applications are still accepted after this deadline, however, applications submitted before the deadline are prioritized. At the University of Delaware in Newark, DE, the Center for Hybrid, Active, & Responsive Materials (CHARM) is an interdisciplinary research center that provides a full-time, 10-week summer REU program with research opportunities in innovative materials science and engineering. CHARM's participating faculty come from a range of UD departments including the Departments of Materials Science & Engineering, Chemistry & Biochemistry, Chemical & Biomolecular Engineering, and Physics & Astronomy. REU participants will be matched with a faculty mentor & a graduate student mentor where they will work on a research project centered around the main ideas of the Center's research groups: IRG1 which focuses on nature-inspired, computationally designed peptide active materials and IRG2 which focuses on tomorrow’s terahertz technologies using hybrid quantum materials. In addition to research, the program offers professional development workshops, visits to local industry sites, opportunities to present research, and more! For more information about CHARM, please visit our website mrsec.udel.edu. For questions, please reach out to Education Director, Allie Landry at alandry@udel.edu.
