Overview

This opportunity leverages well-studied watersheds in the Finger Lakes Region of New York and analytical resources at the City College of New York to offer undergraduates early in their STEM career a mentored experience of research in integrated environmental science. Participants will work in teams with dedicated faculty mentors to design a research program that addresses hypotheses surrounding environmental microplastic contamination. Participants can focus on sources, transport or fate of environmental microplastic, and consider the impacts of microplastic on ecosystems. In addition to the research experience, students will participate in career-building workshops and may present their research at a professional conference during the following academic year. Participants will be based at Hobart & William Smith Colleges in the heart of the Finger Lakes region of New York for field work and initial sample preparation, then travel to New York City to complete laboratory analyses and interpretation of results at the City College of New York.
