The Grenada Summer Undergraduate Research Fellows - Teaming Up on Reefs and in Forests (Grenada SURF-TURF) program offers international tropical conservation research experience in Grenada for up to 6 undergraduate students per year. Participation includes a spring semester 1-credit seminar course to prepare for international travel and research and a paid 2-8 week summer research experience in Grenada. The spring semester seminar course will prepare students for their international research experience including learning about tropical conservation issues, developing independent research projects with US and Grenadian mentors, obtaining scuba dive certification (if able), and international travel logistics. The international travel component, typically beginning in late May, will include paid travel, group lodging, and stipends to participate in conservation research with international research partners and the mentor team. Research topics cover major themes in tropical conservation and specific threats in marine and terrestrial environments, including disease, habitat degradation, invasive species, cryptic biodiversity, exploitation, and restoration. Research includes projects in marine environments (e.g., coral reef fish surveys, artificial reef assessment, monitoring sea turtle population health) and terrestrial environments (e.g., endangered frog conservation, disease assessment, rainforest biodiversity surveys), using traditional and cutting-edge techniques. In addition to gaining international research experience, students will also have opportunities to network and learn from US and Grenadian collaborators in a dynamic and multicultural setting.

Applicants are required to be full-time undergraduate students at either the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee or Wisconsin Lutheran College at the time of research experience (late May). Students should be declared majors in Biology or other conservation science-related fields and have completed at least one course in Biology or a Conservation-related discipline. Students must be U.S. citizens or permanent residents and maintain good academic standing with a minimum 2.0 cumulative GPA and 2.5 in their major. By the time of travel (May), students must have the proper documentation (passports) to travel to Grenada. Strong candidates must also have a passion for conservation, be able to live abroad in a tropical environment and work as a team, be keen to improve their leadership and professional development skills, and be committed to knowledge generation and rigorous scientific discovery. Students with no previous international experience are encouraged to apply.
