Overview

The Navigating the New Arctic Community Office (NNA-CO) is a program funded by the National Science Foundation to address challenges in the rapidly changing Arctic using convergence research. The hybrid NNA Research Experience aims to connect Arctic students and NNA researchers in a mutually beneficial exchange that fosters shared understanding, integrates Indigenous and Western scientific knowledge, and supports community-based solutions to Arctic challenges. By providing paid research opportunities and professional networking, the program builds student capacity in STEM while fostering trust, learning, and connections across rural and urban communities, cultures, and knowledge systems—ultimately opening pathways for collaboration to navigate the new Arctic. The NNA Research Experience program application is open to all Alaska undergraduate and community college students. Through this program, students will gain the skills and confidence to explore research careers, develop and investigate questions about the Arctic environment, and strengthen their ability to analyze and communicate research. They will build networks across Indigenous and Western knowledge systems, learn to integrate multiple ways of knowing, and deepen their sense of belonging within both Arctic communities and STEM fields. The NNA Research Experience will run virtually August 11, August 12, and August 13, 2026, asynchronously for approximately 5 hours per week from August 13 to September 11, and in-person in Fairbanks, AK from September 13 to September 17. Students will receive 1 undergraduate-level credit from the University of Colorado and a $1,200 research stipend for successful completion of the program. Travel and lodging for students outside Fairbanks will also be provided. More information can be found on the NNA-CO website. Applications are due June 26, 2026.
