NYU Biology - Simons Foundation Summer Undergraduate Research Program (SURP) is a 10-week, in-person research program for undergraduates. The program places students into laboratories at NYU Biology department. Research span a wide range of areas and use quantitative experimental methods. Under the guidance of volunteer mentors (PhD students, postdoctoral researcher or other research staff), the undergraduates perform experimental or computational research. The program also includes regular workshops on how to read a paper, write an abstract, make a poster and sessions on career preparation, such as writing a statement of purpose. The students present their work the last week of the program in a symposium, also including summer students in other NYU departments. The primary goals of this program are to introduce our research and training programs and to diversify the scientific workforce in the field of biology. Students are provided with housing and stipend. Support is provided by the Simons Foundation, the National Science Foundation, the NYU Biology Department, the Center for Genomics & Systems Biology, and NYU’s Dean for Science. For more guidance on application materials, please see the opportunity website: https://as.nyu.edu/departments/biology/outreach/surp.html Note: The 2026 program capacity depends on funding availability, predicted to be finalized by April 15, 2026.

Applicants must have completed high school and are undergraduates who are currently taking or have have completed an introductory science or biology course. Priority will be given to students who intend to pursue a career in science but have limited opportunities, including those who are at institutions such as small colleges and have limited role models in STEM careers.
