Overview

This NSF funded 10 week summer REU program at the University of Tennessee is centered on the theme Microelectronics and Sensor Systems. We especially focus on underrepresented students and deaf and hard of hearing students in science, technology, engineering, and math. The experience will provide students with the opportunity to engage in multi-disciplinary research projects that rely on and develop new devices and systems in order to understand the environment around us and improve the lives of humans, animals, and the environment. In this 10 week experience a faculty member will mentor students in projects which address the ways in which devices and electronics at the micrometer and smaller scale impact modern technology and provides advances in environmental science, physics, agriculture, space exploration, and biology. Students will use state of the art software and instrumentation to develop theories and design and implement microelectronics and sensor systems. In addition to independent projects, students will be exposed to potential career pathways enabled by advanced degrees and through professional development and mentorship improve their competency in oral and written communication, research strategies, the scientific method, and critical thinking. There is a $600/week stipend (10 weeks) for each student participant, additional support for on-campus housing, and reimbursement for travel costs.

Eligibility

Any STEM major (chemistry, biology, engineering, physics etc) with an interest in learning more about microelectronics and sensor systems. No prior research experience required. All levels (freshman, sophomore, junior, and senior) accepted.
