Overview

This REU site offers research training to highly motivated undergraduate students within the common theme of novel materials for energy applications. Three specific areas within this theme are targeted: 1) Materials for catalysis; 2) Quantum materials for energy needs; and 3) Transparent conducting thin films for photovoltaics. Students will gain hands-on training in topics such as synthesis of two-dimensional nanostructured materials and ultrathin films, material characterization, single-atom catalysts, nanostructured materials for electrocatalysis, topological quantum materials, and computational design of materials for energy applications. In addition to research experience, students will benefit from training in critical thinking, data science and machine learning, ethics and scientific integrity, written research communication, scientific presentations (poster and oral), formulation of research hypotheses, and framing of research questions with informed knowledge of key literature in the field. The deadline for application for Summer 2026 is March 14, 2026.

Research topics

Physics, Chemistry, Materials Science, Catalysis, Surface science, Computational design of materials

Eligibility

We seek to support undergraduates students majoring in physics, chemistry, or materials science who have just completed their freshman or sophomore years at an institution of higher education and are working toward a 4-year undergraduate degree. Priority will be given to under-represented students in STEM who have had limited or no previous research experience, and who are very excited about the possibility of a career in STEM. Special consideration will be given to veterans, non-traditional students (over 30 years old), students with disabilities, and students who are the first in their families to attend college/university.
