Overview

The Southeastern US houses some of the greatest diversity of species in the nation and is a region in need of ecologically trained scientists. Within the North American Coastal Plain Biodiversity Hotspot, which covers a large portion of Alabama, our REU Site is focused on providing research experiences to undergraduate students interested in applied ecology and conservation, including a systems approach to ecology, hypothesis development, experimental design, data analysis and interpretation, and research ethics. REU students will also engage in professional development activities and be exposed to a diversity of ecosystems, research labs, and ecological research methods. Our overarching goal is to provide the educational, research, and professional development activities that can give undergraduate students an engaging hands-on experience working in ecology and conservation. To accomplish this goal, we will provide students with a scaffolded environment that allows them to develop independence, skills, and knowledge that will increase their opportunities in pursuing a career in science, especially in the Southeastern US.
