Overview: The NRT program offers unique graduate traineeship experience to M.S. and Ph.D. students pursuing research on grand challenge problems interfacing materials science, data analytics, and machine learning (ML). The program harnesses the strength in polymer materials science at The University of Akron (UA), the important progress in data analytics and machine learning tools, and the intangible values of nonacademic internship opportunities at federal and industrial laboratories to design a unique interdisciplinary graduate traineeship. Objectives: 1. Investigate and discover materials by AI. 2. Skilled in digital data, AI, ML for research. 3. Work in multidisciplinary research setting. 4. Effective team member in diverse research group. Benefits: a) The trainees will receive a Data Science Engineering graduate certificate, while enrolled in UA’s M.S. or Ph.D. programs. b) The trainees will become strong proponents of ML and digitalization tools in materials research and acquire skills to work in non-academic settings. c) The trainees will learn multi-disciplinary research skillsets through lab rotation with PI/co-PIs at UA. d) The trainees will undergo one summer federal internship at either NASA Glenn Research Center (GRC) or Dayton Wright-Paterson Air Force Research Lab (AFRL). e) The trainees will under one summer industrial internship at one of the major companies. f) The trainees will have overseas research experience through immersion in labs abroad. g) The trainees will participate in seminar and workshop series to strengthen their knowledge and skillsets to succeed as a researcher. Allowance: · US student stipend: $34,000/yr · Gov't lab internship: $1000 · AFRL internship: $2,000 · International exp.: $3,000 · Tuition/fees: $17,384 Contact Natalie Bauman (nbw1@uakron.edu) with any questions. *Acceptance of students is on rolling basis, students should apply early.*
